Ever get the disturbing feeling that a person you know cares more for the labels than the ideologies? You suddenly wonder if they actually agree with your politics or if they have just listened enough to pick up on who the "bad guys" are. You begin to notice that they repeat to you exactly what was said in a left-wing documentary that you watched together as if to make it more true. It's like in a horror movie where the hero touches his apparently sleeping friend, only for his hand to go straight through the paper-thin flesh and discover that the friend has been eaten from the inside some time ago.

At least my expectations would not be high if I were talking to a parrot.

Do you ever notice when somebody stops seeing the persons he disagrees with as separate individuals and starts seeing them as the opposition? When the motivations of this people dwindle until none are left but "It hates me"? When alien thinking becomes a sign of alien spirit?

"Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you."
--Matthew 5:44, NKJV
"Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence."
--Article 11.1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
"I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it."
--The Friends of Voltaire, Evelyn Beatrice Hall
I see all these as reflection of the fundamental principle that no matter what dispute falls between you and another, you are still the same. He is just as human as you are.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the US Bush administration. I may even think that a good few of the high-ranking individuals are short-sighted, dangerous and strongly influenced by the very rich. But I do not believe that this means all Republicans are either stupid or evil. Perhaps I am naive to think that it cannot possibly be that simple. But some things just aren't simple.
